On October 27, 1970, U.S. Patent Nos. D219,043 and D219,044 issued to Jacob de Gelder on Toy tops:
These patents were assigned to Mattel, Inc., and were marketed in the 1970’s as WIZZERS:
Wizzzer’s first appeared in the 1969 Mattel Catalog and marketed though out the early ’70’s. There were two basic shapes offered in a variety of colors and customizable with stickers. What really made the tops unique was a super-spinning, high-tech bearing and flywheel that allowed the top to spin at very high speed and remain upright for long periods of time. It was also incredibly easy to use.
The tops have been periodically revived, including as a Happy Meal toy in 2005.
