February 10, 2014, marked the 123rd anniversay of the issuance of U.S. Patent No. 446,054 on the Ouija Board.\u00a0 As the story is told by descendants of the inventors, the Patent Examiner refused to issue\u00a0a patent without proof tha the invention worked.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The\u00a0requested demonstration was made\u00a0during an\u00a0Examiner Interview,\u00a0as\u00a0dramatically recounted in the Smithsonian<\/strong><\/em> in October 2013:<\/p>\n

the chief patent officer demanded a demonstration\u2014if the board could accurately\u00a0 spell out his name, which was supposed to be unknown to Bond and Peters, he\u2019d\u00a0 allow the patent application to proceed. They all sat down, communed with the\u00a0 spirits, and the planchette faithfully spelled out the patent officer\u2019s name.\u00a0 Whether or not it was mystical spirits or the fact that Bond, as a patent\u00a0 attorney, may have just known the man\u2019s name, well, that\u2019s unclear, Murch says.\u00a0 But on February 10, 1891, a white-faced and visibly shaken patent officer\u00a0 awarded Bond a npatent for his new \u201ctoy or game.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
