He also patented an improvement in polishing leather, a polygraph &#8212; an early copying machine, and an improved grater.  Nathan Ames was also a writer and a poet.  He died August 17, 1865.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan&#8217;s revolving stairs were never commercialized. The first successful commercial escalator was Jesse Wilford Reno&#8217;s Endless Conveyor or Elevator (U.S. Patent No. 470,918, issued March 15, 1892).  His Endless Conveyor was displayed as a ride at Coney Island&#8217;s Iron Pier in 1896, transporting patrons seven feet into the sky!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"494\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-22.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-22.png 494w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-22-189x300.png 189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> In 1902, Reno founded Reno Electric Stairways and Conveyors, Ltd. and his invention was installed in various locations.
