On a cruise he noticed a machine that counted rotations of the ship&#8217;s propeller, and thought something similar could be used to track cash transactions back at his saloon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James enlisted the help of his brother John, a skilled mechanic, and the brothers began working on a design for such a device. After several failed prototypes, they created their third design, operated by pressing a key that represented a specific amount of money. There was no cash drawer. James and John Ritty patented the design on November 4, 1879, as &#8220;Ritty&#8217;s Incorruptible Cashier&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-39.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"548\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-39.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-39.png 548w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-39-214x300.png 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rittys opened a small factory to make cash registers\u00a0while continuing to operate the saloon.
