It was never commercialized.  The first commercially successful Chewing Gum was patented by Thomas Adams on February 14, 1871 (U.S. Patent No. 111798):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48-798x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48-798x1024.png 798w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48-768x986.png 768w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48-1196x1536.png 1196w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-48-1595x2048.png 1595w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chickly (chickle) a natural vegetable gum collected from several species of Mesoamerican trees in the genus Manilkara, including M. zapota, M. chicle, M. staminodella, and M. bidentata. This was the basis of the first commercially successful chewing gum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Adams (May 4, 1818 \u2013 February 7, 1905) was a 19th-century American scientist and inventor considered to be a founder of the chewing gum industry. Adams worked as a secretary to former Mexican leader Antonio L\u00f3pez de Santa Anna, who chewed a natural gum called chicle. Adams first tried to formulate the gum into a rubber for making tires, and when that didn&#8217;t work, he turned the chicle into a chewing gum called New York Chewing Gum.
