Grant, a dentist, received a U.S. Patent No. 638,920, on a golf tee:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-31.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"764\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-31.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-31.png 517w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-31-203x300.png 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The golf tee comprises a wooden spike with a flexible rubber peg supporting the ball. Dr. Grant was a better inventor than a marketer, he never reaped the benefits of his invention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks earlier, on November 21, 1899,  received U.S. Patent No. D31878 on a Golf Tee, and while it would certainly hold a golf ball for striking with a club, it was nothing like modern golf tees:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-32.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"555\" height=\"749\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-32.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-32.png 555w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-32-222x300.png 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> A few months later, William Herrick received U.S. Patent No. 648956 on a Golf Tee more like Atherton Sewall&#8217;s:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-33.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"796\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-33.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-33.png 512w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-33-193x300.png 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until December 16, 1924, almost exactly 25 years after Grant&#8217;s patent, that another patent issued on the type of golf tee that wad imbedded in the ground:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-34.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"531\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-34.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-34.png 531w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-34-197x300.png 197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Patent No. 1,522,544, issued January 13, 1925, shows a tee that would be recognizable by modern golfers:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-35.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"845\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-35.png 533w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-35-189x300.png 189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>U.S. Patent No. 1,542,505, issued five months later on June 16, 1925, shows a tee very close to the modern product:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-36.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"799\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-36.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-36.png 500w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-36-188x300.png 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, William Lowell, a dentist like Grant, and an avid golfer, received U.S. Patent No. 1,670,627 for a \u201cGolfing Tee&#8221; made of wood:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-37.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"530\" height=\"799\" src=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-37.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-37.png 530w, https:\/\/patents.harnessip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-37-199x300.png 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> The gutta percha tip was dropped, and the shaft refined, but his &#8220;Reddy Tee&#8221; marked the era if the modern golf tee. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On December 12, 1899, George F.
